Romanian President calls for new sanctions against Russia: “Pressure must be maintained until peace is achieved”

European and Transatlantic Coordination in Support of Ukraine

Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced on Tuesday that he took part in a new videoconference of the Coalition of Willing Nations, where European leaders and transatlantic allies discussed their coordinated support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

His message was shared on Facebook immediately after the meeting:

“Today, during a new videoconference of the Coalition of Willing Nations, we discussed how to coordinate our efforts in support of Ukraine ahead of future negotiations. We all agreed that unity and transatlantic coordination remain our source of strength in the face of Russia’s continued aggressive behavior.”

Direct Call to the Kremlin

The head of state also addressed Russia directly, urging an immediate end to attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure:

“Stopping attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure is the first step Russia must take to show it is truly committed to a real peace process. How could we trust Russia while it continues to kill innocent people?”

Sanctions as Leverage

President Nicușor Dan called for the continuation and even intensification of Western sanctions against Moscow:

“We must continue to exert pressure on Russia, including through new sanctions, until peace is achieved. Ukraine needs our support.”

International Context

The Romanian president’s appeal comes just a day after the historic meeting in Washington between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, seen as a milestone negotiation over Ukraine’s future security.

European leaders are now seeking to align their positions with Washington and to establish a common framework for security guarantees and diplomatic pressure on Moscow.
